Abstract (provided by lecturer):
Intergenerational learning plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable development by fostering knowledge exchange, mutual understanding, and shared responsibility between younger and older generations. This initiative explores intergenerational learning as a practical approach to sustainability education, focusing on how dialogue, joint activities, and community-based learning can strengthen social cohesion and support locally grounded sustainable practices. Drawing on experiences from UNESCO-designated sites such as Biosphere Reserves and Geoparks, the project highlights the value of combining traditional knowledge with youth-driven innovation. By creating structured opportunities for intergenerational collaboration, the initiative aims to empower communities, enhance youth engagement, and contribute to long-term sustainable development outcomes.
Lecturer’s Profile:
Aida Mammadova is an Associate Professor at the International Center for Research and Education of Japan Studies at Kanazawa University, Japan. Her research focuses on field-based ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) programmes for international students in the UNESCO Hakusan Biosphere Reserve, promoting sustainable local development while enabling students to learn local knowledge from community members. She is a UNESCO Chair holder in Intergenerational Learning for Sustainable Development and received the UNESCO MAB Young Scientist Awards in 2017. Her publications include Sustainable Development Goals, learning from Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve (Kanazawa University, International Student Center, Japan, 2018).
