Reconnaissance Survey in Myanmar for IRCI’s project on natural disasters

As part of its activities for the first year of the project “Preliminary Research on ICH Safeguarding and Disaster-Risk Management in the Asia-Pacific Region,” IRCI sent two researchers, Shigeaki Kodama (Project Research Fellow, National Museum of Ethnology) and Meredith Wilson (Stepwise Heritage and tourism) to Myanmar.

During their brief trip during 13-17 March 2017, they visited Bagan, Lake Inle, Mandalay, and Yangon and had a series of meetings with local researchers, government officials, and specialists in various organisations in both culture and disaster management related fields. The trip was extremely insightful for IRCI to have better understanding of the current situation of natural disaster management in Myanmar, and the associated situation of ICH, including recent disaster events such as Cyclone Nargis (2008) and earthquakes in Bagan.
