Online Seminar ‘SYNERGIZING CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE MULTICULTURAL URBAN CONTEXT OF GEORGE TOWN’ to be held on 22 January 2024

IRCI’s Asia-Pacific Research Forum for ICH Safeguarding is hosting the sixth online seminar for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the Asia-Pacific region on 22 January 2024, inviting Ms ANG Ming Chee, General Manager of the George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), as lecturer.

George Town, a city situated on Penang Island of Malaysia, was jointly inscribed with Melaka as a UNESCO World Heritage site, ‘the Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca’ in 2008. This seminar details the efforts and challenges of GTWHI as the site manager of a multicultural and urban heritage city.

This seminar is open to the public. Anyone interested in the topic is welcome to join upon registration.

Title:              Synergizing Cultural Heritage in the Multicultural Urban Context of George Town
Lecturer:       ANG Ming Chee (General Manager of George Town World Heritage Incorporated [GTWHI] /
                        UNESCO-accredited facilitator of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage)
                       Born and raised in the inner city of George Town, she carries her duties with much passion and fervor, 
                       through innovative ideas and holistic management of the World Heritage Site for the benefit of the local people.
                       Specialized in resource mobilization, policy making, project management and risk assessment, she has incorporated 
                       built heritage conservation, with elements of disaster risk reduction and intangible cultural heritage safeguarding 
                       to create a sustainable heritage city for the people who live in, work in and use George Town.
Abstract:        George Town Heritage City has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
                       As part of a serial site with the Melaka Heritage City, George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) was 
                       established as a Site Manager by the State Government of Penang. This presentation details the challenges and 
                       limitations in the management a Cultural Heritage Site under the 1972 Convention that consists of both tangible
                       intangible heritage in the Outstanding Universal Values. I shall also share our strategies and opportunities to
                       and overcome the issues through synergizing resolution from the 2003 Convention.
