| Description | Before celebrating a wedding, people in Shughnan perform a series of rituals and customs, which are essential, and without their completion, a wedding ceremony would not take place. These rituals are called pre-wedding rituals or pre-wedding series. The pre-wedding series of ceremonies” begins with the ceremony of choosing the bride and ends with the custom of inviting guests to the celebration of the wedding. The series of pre-wedding rituals includes the customs of choosing the bride (xuščīd), matchmaking (guftugu or xeẋitlāpt), offering qalin and gifts (kuẋmat qalin), the ceremony of cutting and sewing clothes of the bride and groom (jůmaburůn), cooking bread and sweet halvah (kulcha-yat xiẋc pêxt), and inviting guests to the wedding ceremony (jêtchīd). Starting with the custom of choosing a bride and until arranging a wedding ceremony is considered a crucial moment for the bride and groom. The founder of the theory of transition ceremonies, Arnold van Gennep, and his followers studied the series of special periods within the framework of transitional ceremonies and established three periods of transition: the first one is separation (preliminary), the second is limen (intermediate or liminar), and the third is reaggregation (inclusions or postliminar). Every transition is accompanied by a sequential passage, making up a single ceremonial cycle. In this article, we focused on the theory of Arnold van Gennep and analyze that through which periods of transition ceremonies in traditional culture in Shughnan the bride and groom are passing. |
