| Description | A fieldwork report based on the author's PhD thesis. Malagan ritual art traditions of New Ireland have not been considered in terms relevant to the New Irelanders themselves. This report documents the malagan ritual art traditions of Tabar, which is acknowledged as the traditional source of malagan, and analyses malagan following the wishes of Tabar Islanders themselves. Two series of ritual ceremonies are described, a mortuary series and a commemorative one. Over 450 malagan descriptions are recorded. Social and cultural connections are described, and then the Indigenous taxonomic structure is presented and analysed. |
