Description
Sai Rain is a traditional dance originating from the municipality of Viqueque, performed specifically to welcome newborns. The ritual of welcoming newborns is very common among the Timorese people. In Timorese tradition, the newborn is kept indoors for several days. Before the newborn can be taken outside, the parents must perform a ritual to introduce the baby to the world. This ritual is commonly known as the eye-washing ritual. However, in the municipality of Viqueque, they perform the eye-washing ritual accompanied by the Sai Rain dance. After this ritual, the mother and her newborn baby can go outside to get water and firewood or engage in any activity outside the home.
