Ahei is a unique traditional dance practiced in the Eraulo village of Ermera Municipality. This dance is performed only when the sacred house has been built. In East Timor, the sacred house is recognized as the cultural identity of the Timorese people, and it is from this traditional house that the union of generations from the same lineage can be strengthened. To further reinforce these generational bonds, the Ahei dance is the only dance that the generation practices to foster a sense of comfort and connection among them as they build their house. While dancing, they sing a traditional song that calls upon generations scattered across other municipalities to support the construction process. The song emphasizes that it doesn't matter how far they've traveled, but rather the importance of maintaining strong relationships as brothers and family.
